Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteer International Crisis Line Advocate
Advocates answer the crisis line six hours per week from our office or their home. They provide crisis intervention and advocacy for clients, including safety planning, information and referral, and emotional support. Advocates meet monthly with their fellow volunteers and staff for a 2-hour meeting; they make a commitment to volunteer for one year.
- To support the mission of Americans Overseas Domestic Violence Crisis Center to help American survivors of domestic violence overseas make informed decisions about the abuse in their lives and in the lives of their children through intervention and education.
- To answer the crisis line at home or in the office.
- To provide crisis intervention and counseling, information/referral, and support services to crisis line clients.
- To make appropriate referrals to internal and external services.
- To do research for clients’ specific needs when necessary.
- To complete confidential case management forms.
- To stay informed of clients’ needs through reading daily e-mail updates and attending a 2-hour monthly meeting/training.
Qualifications:
- Complete the required Americans Overseas Domestic Violence Crisis Center advocate training in full (some sessions can be waived if you have previous training or experience working with survivors of domestic violence).
- Be supportive of agency philosophies and mission statement.
- Adhere to all agency policies and procedures.
- Be able to schedule crisis line shifts for one full month in advance.
- Attend 2-hour monthly volunteer meetings.
- Have good listening and communication skills.
- Be able to work with minimum supervision.
- Be able to maintain confidentiality and work with clients around sensitive issues.
